How We Calculated the Transitional Acreage Impact of Purchasing Kashi Certified Transitional Food
How We Calculated Acres Per Box
- To calculate the number of acres that would be supported by buying boxes of Kashi products, we took the pounds of product contracted for in 2017 and divided it by the acres of 2016 transitional ingredients that went into those products
- We used a weighted average to determine what an average “box” of Kashi Certified Transitional food would be, giving more weight to Dark Cocoa Karma cereal over Chewy Nut Butter Bars, since the estimate for pounds of cereal produced are higher than for the new bars
How We Calculated Number of Adults in America
- We used US Census population estimates from July at http://www.census.gov/quickfacts/table/PST045215/00 then subtracted that total from the “Population Estimates” to get US adults
- We used the % of “Persons Under 18 Years” to figure out how many people that would be (by multiplying it by the total population), then subtracted that total from the “Population Estimates” to get US adults
How We Figured Out How Acreage Translates to the Size of a City
- We converted “supported transitional acres” to “supported transitional square miles” of land and then compared those square miles to the tables at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_area
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_and_territories_by_area
We chose the city closest to those square miles of land that are also most likely to be recognizable.
